It should be the top priority of every person on this board to ensure there is additional funding found so that additional police officers can be hired and trained. Police officers from lower crime areas can be moved to the higher crime areas but the police department must ensure there is not an increase of crime in those areas with fewer police officers. How the changes affect the fiscal cycle of your budgeting The federal†¦show more content†¦By adding the auditing process to line-item budgeting, government management focuses on expenditures, thus creating a type of accountability that confronts corruption, helps discourage public employees deviating from strict instructions, and enhances tighter control over the employees’ behavior. For these reasons, most governments utilize some form of line-item budgeting at some level within their organization† (Smith amp; Lynch, 2004). Differences of the chosen budgeting approach from those not used The line item budget gives a detail example of what is spent where. This gives the greatest insight on where money can be saved and in what areas can have the greatest effect with additional funding. When cities are having trouble finding funding for departments that are as important as the police department these budgets will also help find money from other departments that can be used for the police department. The Battle Of Elderbush Gulch And The Shirt - 1108 Words

The Battle of Elderbush Gulch and The Shirt can also be compared by examining how they handle the topic of colonialism and the stereotypes that have arisen due to interactions between settlers and Native Americans. In both films, white people are assumed to be capitalist and concerned with a person’s external image. However, this implication is either seen as positive or negative depending on how a filmmaker interprets history. After all, those who hold power and privilege are the ones who write the history books, and even today most humans’ views towards colonialism remain largely shaped by fiction. The Battle of Elderbush Gulch glorifies the successful settlers who could subdue the Natives and build a new country. The Natives are portrayed through the use of â€Å"othering†, which is the process of placing a group into opposition with one’s identified group. This opposition takes the form of binary opposites that the group in power defines. In The Battl e of Elderbush Gulch, the Natives are frequently â€Å"othered† through the use of cinematography. The Natives are first introduced as newcomers are dropped off at the white settlement. As the settlers gather around to greet the wagon, two Native women stand in the background, glaring towards the settlers, and furthermore, the camera and the audience. Again, this scene is used to alienate the Natives by placing them in the background with menacing expressions, while the settlers are given a medium shot to allow their vivid

Racial Discrimination and Class Prejudice Free Essays

If someone said racism to you, what would you first think of? Would one think of black and white people straight away? If so, you need to understand that racism isn’t just about skin colour it’s about where you’re from, what religion you are and often different parts of a country are split due to racial discrimination. The idea of racism has been around for hundreds of years, it’s because human’s natural instinct is to put others down to make themselves look better. When Africans were taken across the Atlantic for the slave trade, they were demoralized so much so that they would rather take their own life than commit to a life of slavery. We will write a custom essay sample on Racial Discrimination and Class Prejudice or any similar topic only for you Order Now In southern America in 1619 White farmers and landowners needed cheap labour to work on their plantations; this is why the slaves were first brought to America. The Americans regarded the black people as animals; they didn’t agree that they were even the same species. However this all changed when slavery was banned around America in 1807, and every man was free. Eventually black men begin to gain land of there own and work for themselves, but this did not go unnoticed. Even after the civil war the black people in the southern states of America were still discriminated against and treated awfully. Groups of men used to go around at night and just burn, torture and kill any black people that they think have stepped out of line. Racial discrimination is still a very big part of our world today, racism is not just black and white, in Zimbabwe white farmers are being pushed out of their land; where their families have lived and farmed for hundreds of years, whilst their own land is being distributed as the black farmers believe it is there land. Nevertheless the white families are left penniless. In England today Muslims very often feel discriminated against, as English people are scared of them, English people think of them as terrorists after a lot of bad press, but this is not the case. If the cloud of doubt were lifted just a little, millions of people would have better lives. I find it hard to understand how people accept the status that they are given; they should surely be able to choose how to live their life and what to do. In â€Å"Roll Of Thunder, Hear my Cry† one line really stuck out for me, â€Å"Comical objects to cruel eyes that gave no thought our misery† this shows how the black people recognize their place in society and even if they don’t believe in it they accept it. Martin Luther King gave an inspiring speech, which changed the views of millions of people around the world â€Å"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: â€Å"We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal. â€Å"† Equality is a hard concept to grasp for many people around the world due to the fact that lack of education is still a big problems lots of different countries especially L. E. D’s, this is mostly due to class. However this year in America, a country renowned for their vicious racists, have elected a black president. Barack Obama, the aforementioned president, is a pinnacle of light to such a diverse nation. Seeing as a mere thirty years ago black people were still fighting for entirely equal rights. Barack Obama is now thought of as the most powerful man in the world. Never the less this does not discount racism in America as there is evidence to suggest that the poor black people and ethnic minorities do not still receive the opportunities given to white people. Class prejudice happens all around the world, in England today this is a big issue, but the homeless often sell ‘big issues’ around the streets so they can scrap a living from the tower of success. Every class in Britain is stereotyped, it is almost as if the country is divided into, people your allowed to talk to and people your not. These are often referred to as classes. People get stereotyped on their class all the time, then it often falls into smaller categories such as race, or where you live. Stereotyping is a habit that we all need to get out of. Racism and Class prejudice is a growing problem in England today, if we do not take action it may get out of control. Infect some would argue it already is with the steady growth of gang crime and people getting hurt just because of where they are from. We don’t want to have people beaten on the streets or worse killed just because of their background. Everyone deserves a chance in life without being pre judged by other people. Shiloh by Bobbie Ann Mason Essay Example For Students

Shiloh by Bobbie Ann Mason Essay What do you do, feel, or even act like when your life is changed from one event maybe not in your life, but in someone elses? Well thats what happens to Norma Jean Moffitt in the story Shiloh by Bobbie Ann Mason. Norma Jeans husband was the kind of husband who was never home, but at random moments here and there, when he was passing by from trips driving his truck. She was content with this, well in reality she grew to having absolutely no problems with his line of work, until the day came when he couldnt do his job anymore. Leroy Moffitt injured his leg in a highway accident and was home ever since he was unable to drive his tractor-trailer. These two people now stuck in one home, married, and to Norma Jean, stuck together under one roof. After awhile Norma Jean realizes she cant take him being home. She also realizes that she really doesnt know who her husband is or even was. And in the end does Norma Jean stand at the brink of her freedom, or her own death? Norma Jean I think is standing on the edge of that cliff staring at her death. Not maybe because she wants to die, but knowing that she has nothing more to look forward, but the reality of the end. Norma Jean was a woman who was content with her life, she was content with her mother still having a large say in how she thought and what she did. She liked the idea her husband wasnt around, and when that all changed, she changed, Norma Jean changed. The thought of her mother knowing she smoked, she couldnt have that. So when her mother Mabel finds out, she mentions the one thing that would cause a reaction out of Norma Jean. The memories of the lost child as an infant. The sad feelings brought back, all to pay her back for seeing her smoking. Then you have the husband, what does he mean to her now? Is there love, lust, hate, and disdain? It makes you wonder though, the ideas that are running through the mind of Norma Jeans how she really feels of her husband. She calls his truck widow-maker (p. 762), even though she knows that he probably has been faithful, she still wishes that she could celebrate the homecoming more happily, and the most startling is the fact that she is some what disappointed now to find him when she arrives home. But lets take a deeper look, maybe it is none of those feeling of love, lust, hate, maybe just maybe by him being gone driving that widow-maker it kept her from dealing with reality. Reality of what or how their relationship was before he became a truck driver. The reality of the youthful marriage they had, a young baby lost, and the reality that they really dont know who each other are. After the death of their son Randy, they never really talked about, never dealt with the issues, the feeling, or the pain. But with him home, Leroy gets the feeling of needing to talk about it, so all he feels is the since of awkwardness. Leroy has been gone for so long that he who Norma Jean was when he left is how Norma Jean is now, when that isnt the case. Before he started truck driving he had bough Norma Jean and organ for Christmas. Well the songs that he would have her play then he wanted her to play now, for example songs out of the sixties songbook, or Cant take my eye off of you, Ill be back. After fifteen years he still thinks that Norma Jean is that same girl before he left, when in reality she became someone else. The biggest key in this story to what happens in the end I feel has to deal with the title itself, Shiloh. .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 , .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 .postImageUrl , .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 , .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173:hover , .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173:visited , .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173:active { border:0!important; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173:active , .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173 .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ufe9e5dbb2c4c8efecd9f3dc69621c173:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Balance Sheet EssayThis a place of a civil war battlefield. This place could represent a number of different things, but I feel that it mean an end. The end of many lives, the end of the war, they use this place as a commemoration of a battle that ended in death and the end of many people. So when Norma Jean and Leroy go there, and thats where she tells him that she wants a divorce, and all he thinks is he has to think of a new idea, great idea and she will stay. She realizes more, that no matter what, he is in the past, and she cant move forward, and that this is the end of them, and I think how it ends is the end of her, her life. I feel that this is significance to how she ends everything. Where a place was the end for so many, it will also be the end of her and the end of her relationship. Norma Jean, did she give up? Did she do what many thought she did, jump to her death? I feel she did. I feel that there is so much that would have led her to feeling there was nothing else left to do. As the story describes, the sky turned unusually pale and I feel that she wasnt beckoning to Leroy, but was saying her final goodbyes.

Chastity essays

Chastity essays The video watched in class touched on some of my personal concerns as a human. I agree with almost everything discussed in the video. It was entertaining to listen to the perspectives of this couple. Fortunately, they succeeded and did change some of my opinions. Some points sounded very off the wall. Many things the man brought up sounded like a lie. Like when he talked about STDs all of the statistics sounded much too exaggerated. I have heard many statistics in this area and this one just sounded out of proportion. Also, they made going out on the weekends with friends sound wrong to do. I feel that that is a huge part of teenage life and without experimenting with your boundaries it would be hard to know who you are. It is necessary to know your boundaries as an individual whether it is sexual because this sets an establishment in your brain. It is up to the individual to do what they want sexually. But for me personally, my boundaries are set at a very reasonable place because I am a Catholic. Other points sounded reasonable. Although this video was a little overdone, it still influenced my opinions in a positive way. I used to not think so much about how far I go with girls, but now I have more respect for the girls I encounter. I feel I have put more value on the worth of my virginity. I also believe that many kids in our society today have no value on how far they go. This video is good for them because it scares the audience into doing anything sexual. I feel there are many problems in todays society, one of which is pornography. I am ashamed of the women who use their body for others entertainment. This just probably kills their self worth. Another problem is with girls these days that are so innocent and yet so susceptible to guys to give up their body. It is these girls that I feel this video is important for. They just place no worth on themselves and this just creates problems to all mayhem fro...

Argument Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2

Argument - Essay Example Some four years ago a relative of my aunt’s was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was only fifteen years old and there was no family history of cancer yet when asked for the cause of the disease the doctors said that high exposure to DDT was the cause of cancer. In Africa (where they lived) DDT was frequently used to counter Malaria and the same chemical is an integral component of many of the pesticides used on agricultural fields, which later forms a part of our food chain either through the vegetables we eat or through the red or white meat we consume. The concentration of DDT by the time it reaches the bloodstream of human beings reaches very high levels compared to its concentration in plants or animals. Consequently, the adverse effects of DDT in human beings can cause diseases such as cancer. As is the case of genetically modified food, people do not raise the issue of the usage of concentrated levels of pesticides because they themselves are not aware of the potential dangers associated with the use and exposure to such chemicals. In a documentary aired on BBC, which I saw a few years back a farmer was being interviewed and asked as to why he wore no protective mask while spraying the fields with pesticide and his reply was that he felt no need to do so. Just as Carson pointed out, this shows us how little awareness exists amongst the primary stakeholders who are most vulnerable to the detrimental effects of these chemicals. Moreover, when asked as to why he used pesticides he clarified that they were cheap and thus killed the pests. My friend who is studying Agricultural Engineering in India also hardly knows the potential threats which pesticides can cause to the environment. The justification provided by Carson for the excessive need to use of pesticides as being nothing but a farce is something I only partially agree with because the scenario of surplus food production is prevalent in
